About Course

Many foster and adoptive parents are puzzled and distressed by children who lie repeatedly or hide the truth. But for many care-experienced young people, dishonesty is not just about misbehaviour — it is a survival strategy rooted in past trauma.

In this workshop, Dr. Mica Douglas will explore why lying and deceit are so common in fostering, how these behaviours develop, and the different ways they can show up. Together, we’ll examine practical approaches to responding with compassion and structure, while guiding children toward honesty and trust.

What Will You Learn?

  • A clear understanding of why lying is so common in care-experienced children
  • Practical strategies for supporting children who use deceit as a coping mechanism
  • Tools to build trust, strengthen honesty, and reduce the shame that fuels lying
